ATLANTA, Ga. - The Argentina national football team, nicknamed La Albiceleste, began its defense of the Copa América title with a 2-0 victory against Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.
Julian Alvarez scored the opening goal in the 28th minute with a powerful right-foot shot into the top corner. Argentina added to its lead in the second half when Rodrigo De Paul converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
The victory is a positive start for Argentina, which is looking to win its 15th Copa América title. Canada, meanwhile, will be disappointed to have lost its opening game, but the team can still qualify for the knockout stages.
